I missed the May 5, 2010 meeting in Harrisonburg on Marcellus Shale gas drilling. I found that this video produced by The Downstream Project with its full coverage provided an excellent overview of the critical issues of concern to us living in the area .

As a result of seeing the video I noted the presentation on West Virginia's gas drilling situation by Ray Renaud. With presenters' information provided in the video I managed to contact Ray and organize a tour of Wetzel County, WV on July 2, 2010. I was able to see the area being hydrofracked and observe the natural gas well drilling impacts on roads with their heavy trucks and drill rig support vehicles.

To actually see the 'industrial development sites' in the forested mountains with the pollution to streams and the mountain top clearing for the drill rigs to do hydrofracking was a shock. Tops of mountains were leveled for large water storage reservoirs to be used for the drilling process. Other large mountain top areas were cleared for compressor stations and streams were emptied of all water flow for the drilling process. No state regulations on "minimum-in-stream" flow in the streams (if WV has regulations) were followed and thus the ecology of stream life was destroyed.

Thanks for making this documentary of the meeting available to the public. It is one step in alerting us all to potential environmental impacts in the Shenandoah Valley of unregulated gas well drilling.

Ah-ha, a little snow just to make things more interesting. Can we meet you at the canoe stops...meaning are the stops near enough to a road or camp ground to get to you?

George and gang
It's great to follow your progress via this computer. I hope you are all not too wet as it has been a steady rain here in Berryville all day. Stay dry, eat always, and pray for warmer weather. Your experience sounds amazing.

Hi John Cope!

The movies are great. It's sort of like a reality TV show... but I hope no-one gets voted off the trail...especially you. I'm glad you went up Stoney Man. That place has special meaning for me (which I believe I already told you about and cannot repeat in public). Did you see the "Stone Man" face from one of the overlooks before you went up it? That's a cool sight.

Deeds and McDonnell had a debate last night and, unfortunately, I think McDonnell won handily. Deeds is a good man but has trouble articulating the progressive agenda. We've done a few bike trips but we all keep looking off at the Blue Ridge because you're not with us.

Glad the weather's been so good for you. Keep the faith! Remember, even if it gets tedious sometimes, it's a lot more exciting up there than down here!

Looks like you are off to a strong start. Enjoyed learning about white tail deer and their importation to the Valley from Arkansas. Keep those feet warm, dry and healthy!

Happy hiking and learning!

Hi Gang!

I've played your Day 3 Post several times and learned something new from it each time. The flickering fire, Carl's informative narration and the film segments (by Bill, George, Travis, and...?) combined to make an appealing and educational Ecoventure snapshot. What a treat to be able to learn about the Blue Ridge from T'ai Rouston, Bill McShea and Wendy Cass.

Enjoy the journey.

So glad to view the videos and see how well the trip is going. You have certainly had beautiful weather, but I did wonder about yesterday's wind and several chilly mornings! We miss you, John, but know that you are having a great time. Thanks for keeping us in the loop during this exciting adventure. All the best to the group! Kate
