George Ohrstrom IIWe are very much looking forward to cooperating with Shenandoah University on EcoVenture 2009.

Shenandoah University Courses for
Shenandoah EcoVenture 2009

Religion 340 – Religion and Ecology – Prof. John Copenhaver

This course examines the beliefs, attitudes, and practices of religions as they relate to the natural world, from Native American traditions to Islam. It will also examine the ways in which religious communities are trying to teach environmental stewardship and caring for creation.

Geography 395 – Topics: The Nature, History, and Culture of the Shenandoah Valley Region - Prof. Josh Kincaid

This will cover many facets of the Ecoventure, as we learn about water resources (Karen Anderson), fish ecology (Dr. Ed Pendleton), history of the valley (Dr. Hofstra), history of the Shenandoah River as a means of travel and commerce, history of the Appalachian Trail and Shenandoah National Park, the Shenandoah Valley in literature (Dr. John Jacobs) and art (Dr Kiefer).

Kinesiology 395 - Topics: Eco-Trekking - Prof. Brian Wigley

This course will incorporate participation in the planning, logistics, training, and execution of the 200 mile backpacking trip and kayaking with an emphasis on learning about the natural environment as well as the effect of humans on natural resources. Students would also be expected to get training in basic first aid and CPR certification.

Mass Communications 395 – Ecoventure and Media - Prof. Gina Daddario

Students will be trained in the use the latest technology for movie making, blogging, and social networking. Students will be required to maintain social networks (i.e. YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc.), blogs, and course management systems as we well as take and edit digital artifacts. During the trip students will be reporting results to groups back on main campus and in local high school classrooms. In November students will be completing projects, meeting face-to-face with main campus classes and high school classes, and assisting in the completion of the documentary.

This makes for an exciting, experiential, multi-disciplinary but well integrated learning experience.
